Abstract

This article explores the major themes, artistic style, and historical-contextual analysis of Washington Irving’s renowned story Rip Van Winkle. The story captures the social transformations, human values, and attitudes toward modernity in 18th–19th century American society through a unique narrative technique. The protagonist’s 20-year sleep serves as a symbolic device to reflect on transitional thinking and societal contrasts. The article also examines Irving’s romantic style and the story’s significance within world literature.
