BASIC CONCEPTS OF CYTOLOGY

This review will include a brief description of the history of cytology since its inception, as well as recent developments. There will be a discussion of different types of samples, exfoliative or aspiration, with an explanation of their use as a screening and diagnostic test. A brief description of the indications, application, sensitivity, specificity, cost-effectiveness, speed and accuracy will be provided. The role of cytopathology in the early detection of cancer will be emphasized.
