Abstract

This article traces the historical formation and subsequent divergence of British, American, and Canadian English. It examines the foundational influences from Germanic roots, Old Norse, and Anglo-Norman French, leading to Early Modern English. The paper, also, explores the transplantation of English to North America, detailing dialect leveling and initial divergence in the colonial period, and analyzes American English's distinctive features like rhoticity. Finally, it aims to  consider Canadian English as a hybrid identity influenced by both British and American norms, concluding with a general views of standardization and their dynamic global trajectories.
